Observational Sketches

Here are some observational sketches. These were created with references, be it an Image or a physical Object.

Imaginary Sketches

These are all sketches from imagination, no reference used. The main purpose of these is to see how well I am learning anatomy, proportions, shape, and composition.

Using a texture to paint

The purpose of this task was to paint using a texture. The example we were give was that of Feng Zhu again as he painted a smoking bug. He used ants as a texture to help paint.

I decided to draw and paint on my own drawing this time, and I'm relatively happy with the outcome.

The form also holds pretty well without Linework:

However I still prefered the image without colour:

And again, without linework it still works:

Using a Colour Swatch

This exercise was to try and create a painting using a specific colour swatch obtained from a source image.

This was the source image:

I then used this process (as explained by Max Leah):

To create a colour swatch for which I then painted this with:

Using this as a reference:

To help with my painting I altered my Photoshop Workspace slightly. It concentrates on the colour swatches, my reference image, and the layers.

Changing Perspective

This was an exercise to change the perspective of a photo so we could use part of it as a texture.

This was the original photo:

This is what we changed it into using various transform tools in photoshop:

This is what it looks like on a cube in 3DS max, we also added a little more geometry by cutting out the windows:

Female Life Drawing

Final Life drawing class. Had a really good lesson today. Really shown some improvement, and you can definitely see I'm starting to draw with my eye and not my what my mind THINKS I see.

Had a few issues where I kept making her too long, but I learnt a few things to help avoid this in the future. My final drawing avoided a lot of the issues but still required some tweaking before I was  happy with it.

2 Minute warm up sketches:

50 minute Speed Paint

Another speed paint, painting night time light this time.

A quick 1 hour speed paint to practice getting values down.

Steam punk Frog

This week's brief was for character design. We had to either create with Sculptris a 3D model, or draw a character.

Sculptris is going to require a lot more practice, so I decided to complete this one 2D.

I am not happy with this piece. I had the full motorbike in there to begin with. But I couldn't achieve the detail I wanted, nor the perspective on the wheels. Because it ruined everything else I decided to crop it this time.

I feel I've captured movement with the scarf and hat direction, though my frog seems lifeless. I couldn't achieve a decent texture on the skin without making it look too busy, and nothing I tried boosted the specular values without messing up the lighting completely.

Things I did like were my attention to detail on the leather goggles, and the shape of the frogs head.

UV Unwrapping

Today we were given a model to practice unwrapping. We covered the trousers and the glove.

Colour Exercise

This exercise was about using a base colour, and base shadow as a starting point. By using two seperate layers, both set to Multiply, and then paint highlights and details on yet another seperate layer on the ver top, colour in this style can be made very quick.

Original Linework by Niklas Jansson:

This is my final coloured image:

This is the desaturated image to help me get my tonal values more correct:

This is a little test I did to work out which way I had to move the colour picker to get a darker tone without saturating the colour.

UVW Unwrap

In the first example we re-visited the Chick Pea can to make a texture map for it. This was the texture map I made:

The reason for two of the circle lids is that one is the top, the other is the bottom, If I wanted too I could change the look of these to differentiate the top and bottom.

Here is a video of my final t-shirt:

In this lesson we were taught how to uvw unwrap.

I then created my diffuse map from a UVW output render, and pasted a bit of art that I had created a while back onto the front of the t-shirt.

Here are a couple of images to show my UVW Unwrap and the Diffuse Map:

UVW Output Render

As you can see, on one of the sleeves I've had to continue some of the artwork to give a seamless impression.

Diffuse Map

I created the seams as close as I could to a real t-shirt.

Life Drawing / Observation Drawing

So I have yet to post any of the work from our Wednesday afternoon lesson as I have had to wait to be able to photograph them in some-what decent lighting conditions.

All the drawings were done on A2 paper, with either charcoal, pencil, or ink.

I included this close up of the head as I spent a lot of time here. I really like the way I've really made it pop out of the page using the background. But making some of the edges quite strong It helps suggest which are sharp and which are soft, rounded edges.

After a break a grid was put behind our subject. This really helped create a perspective as we could use the negative space between the grids.

This is a small ink piece where by putting suggestive background shadow helps create the scene's full lighting.

This first page of sketches were all quick 2-3 minute sketches. A very good warm up exercise, and great practice for proportions and breaking down shapes.

The time was then increased to a few 15 minute sketches.

The time was then increased again to 30 minutes.

This final image took a lot of re-working. I constantly kept drawing what I wanted too, however once I overcome that, I achieved a great sense of perspective! Really happy with the results, and also learn a lot. Again using the negative shapes it helps to draw what you actually see and not what the mind is telling you you're seeing.
